About the Biome and Habitat - Post 2

The pond habitat in Tundra Biome in Planet Zork experiences harsh conditions.

Low Temperature
·        Arctic Tundra has one of the coldest climates of all the biomes as it is located at a high latitude on the northern hemisphere of Planet Zork. The temperature of the pond habitat in the Tundra Biome is cold year round and mostly drops below freezing point. It experiences long winters at average temperatures below -56°C and short summers with average temperatures around 10°C. The pond tends to freeze during the winter period.

Minimal Amount of Rainfall
·        The habitat receives only a minimal amount of rainfall of 20 cm to 60 cm annually. The reason why the habitat receives little rainfall is that the air in the habitat is very cold and cold air carries less moisture than warm air.

Uneven Distribution of Sunlight
·        As the Arctic Tundra exists at extreme northerly latitudes, it experiences seasonal variation in the amount of sunlight. During winter, the sun never rises above the horizon where it experiences dark winters. Whereas in summer, the sun can stay above the horizon for 24 hours a day.

Strong Wind Blowing at High Speed
·        The pond habitat in the Tundra Biome is exposed to strong wind which blows at between 48 to 97 km/h. This is due to the cold air from the northern hemisphere which sweeps through the Arctic Tundra. The biome experiences strong wind as there are very few large and tall trees to slow down the wind.

Low Oxygen Concentration Level
Due to the habitat’s high latitude, it has low oxygen concentration level.
